If you have decided that the time has come for you to shed a few pounds, you want to be certain that you are not eating foods that will sabotage your progress. Unfortunately, if you have to eat on the go, you might feel like eating healthy is an impossibility. There is good news on the horizon; there are healthy food choices that you can make at fast food restaurants. Here are a few suggestions you can consider the next time you have to eat on the run.
Stay Away from Buffets
You have to avoid going to buffet restaurants if you are serious about trying to make healthier food choices when you go out to eat. Although most buffets have soup and salad bars, you stand the chance of overeating, because the reason that most people go to a buffet in the first place is so that they can literally eat as much as they like. Moreover, even if you tried to behave yourself and eat only salad, you have to consider all of the fat that is in salad dressing.
Get Regular Sized Portions
If you decide that you want to pick up something quick from one of the more popular fast food chains, make sure that you get regular sized servings. Do not supersize your meal. Substitute your French fries with a side salad.
Skip the Bacon
Bacon may be tasty, but it has little to no nutritional value, and it is extremely high in fat and calories. There are other ways to enhance the flavor of your burgers, potatoes, and salads. Add extra mustard, pickles, lettuce, and tomatoes instead.
Instead of ordering an extra large cup of soda, or some other sugar loaded drink, order a large cup of water to go along with your meal. If you don’t care for the taste of plain water, you can ask for a couple of slices of lemon to add a little flavor.
Pay Attention to the Menu Descriptions
When you see descriptions on a menu like deep-fried, dipped in batter, breaded, creamy, or cream sauce, you have got to know that you are going to create a world of trouble for yourself if you order something off of the menu that resembles any of those things. The bottom line is that those types of foods are loaded in fat, and are high in calories, and salt. Choose to order a vegetable plate and a roll, and walk away from the grease.
Order What You Want
Generally, when people go to restaurants, they try to put their best set of manners on display, and they try not to make too much of a fuss if their order is not quite right. What you have to do is push away all of that politeness and respect for etiquette, and you have to ask for what you want. Don’t be embarrassed about ordering your salmon without the cream sauce, or your broccoli without the butter sauce.
Don’t Eat So Fast
Take your time to eat your food. Take the time to chew your food slowly, and try to avoid stop and go meals. If you slow your eating down, you will find that you will eat a lot less. It actually takes about 20 minutes for your body to realize that it is full, so it is well worth your time to slow things down a bit.
When you are trying to watch what you eat, and you have to pick up something on the run, there are all sorts of unhealthy temptations out there. The thing of it is you have to make the decision to say no to the junk and yes to the healthier food choices. Eating healthy at a fast food restaurant is not impossible. It just takes a little bit of time and research to figure out what is healthy and what isn’t.
